Advanced Ceramics Yearly Plan
Advanced Ceramics Yearly Plan
For Advanced Ceramics you are REQUIRED to be more original and creative with your ideas. It is OK to use the internet for ideas, but your own artwork must differ significantly from the images you use for inspiration.
Anyone can copy art, but it takes skill and higher levels of thinking to develop your own original ideas. Getting practice at developing YOUR OWN ideas will helps you develop your creative problem solving skills. Good problem solving skills is something ALL employers look for. DEVELOP IT!
For every two projects you complete on this list, you may and should work on a student choice project.
Sometimes we will all work on the same project together, but most times you will work at your own pace and choose your own project.
9. Pottery - create a unique vase or vessel. This can be functional or non-functional. You will be asked to look at various design movements and compare and contrast them. (Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Pewabic/Arts and Crafts Movement, Contemporary.)
10. Create a lamp. (You will have to purchase the hardware for actually making it light up. Kits cost anywhere from $8-$12) This lamp can take any form. It may be slab or coil construction. It can take the shape of an animal or simple the shape of a box, but it must be well crafted, thoughtful and use design principles.
11. Seeds, Pods, & the Ocean - Collect as many real life objects as you can that fall into these categories. Now change it up. Can they be combined? How can you add new elements? Think UNUSUAL textures, shapes, movement. How can you incorporate The Design Elements and Principles to make interesting ART?
For each project you will be expected to blog about your thought process, other artists work, and other topics.

- Whimsical Pot - As a class we will discuss the Elements and Principles of Art and Design. After learning and understanding these principles, you will create a pot that has some kind of shape other than straight up and down. Your pot should CLEARLY emphasize one of the design principles (Movement, Repetition, Asymmetrical Balance, Contrast… you pick!)
2. Underglaze Assignment - Create a vessel, container, dish set that is smooth or has significant areas of “smoothness.” This project you will decorate using underglazes! Underglazes can be mixed and blended to achieve value if desired. Underglazes do not run either, so where you put it, it will remain. This will be a project that involves BOTH ceramic creation as well as drawing and painting skills. Plan on a detailed design. You will likely need to sketch your idea on paper before beginning on your project. I do NOT recommend “winging it.” PLAN IT! Use powerpoint of images and google searches to help you get IDEAS but not to copy ideas. - 3. Rough vs. Smooth - Make a project that has a stark contrast of rough vs smooth. Maybe the contrast is with texture/non textured areas. Maybe it is glazed/non-glazed or glaze-washed areas. Maybe it’s a sculpture, a pot, a or tile, but it should be sketched out and explained to the teacher before beginning.
- 4. SCIENCE! -Create a sculpture based off of something you are currently learning in science class! This sculpture will likely be abstract, tho perhaps not. Within nature, our bodies, in the study of the universe, you will likely find many examples of The Principles of Art and Design (repetition, emphasis, contrast, value etc…) Create a sculpture that involves you some taking some risks. Challenge yourself to think outside the box.
Google: Microbiology, Microbiology in Art
5. Multi Media - Create a piece of pottery that incorporates another element besides clay. This element will have to be added as part of the finishing stage, as non clay elements will likely burn up in the kiln. (it must be a creative application of materials. Do not simply tie on some yarn through two holes and call it a handle.) You may want to think about adding handles of pots made from wood, or interesting yarns or strings woven into holes. Wire and beads may be used. You may have to do some research into how to incorporate some of these things. TAKE RISKS!
6. Clay Bust - This is a HUMAN head. I am open to your interpretations on this. If you want to sculpt one as realistically as possible that is fine. If you want to make it a bit abstract, that is also fine. Sketch out ideas and share them with me before beginning.
7. Protest Art/Social Issues Sculpture - Pick a social issue that you feel strongly about. Maybe it is about war, or bullying or the environment. At this age you should have some current event issues that cause you some concern. This MUST be a sculpture and not a tile. This will take some time to develop an idea.
8. Sculpt a Metaphor - A metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. Examples of metaphors: My brother was boiling mad. (This implies he was too angry.)The assignment was a breeze. (This implies that the assignment was not difficult.)Find a metaphor and create a sculpture based off of it. Sketch your ideas. Discuss your ideas with your friends. Come to me with your idea.
